The region is characterized by a high level of economic development due to its favorable economic and geographical location (the proximity of the coal and metallurgical base of Donbas and Prydniprovia stimulated the development of machine building and metalworking, and the proximity of highly developed regions of Russia - Central Black Earth, Southwest and South - determined the development of agricultural enterprises) and a fairly rich set of its own raw materials. The latter allow for the development of the fuel and energy, chemical, glass, porcelain and faience, and building materials industries.
Agricultural production is characterized by a diversified structure.
The region can be divided into three industrial districts: Central, East Kharkiv, and South Kharkiv. The Central District (Kharkiv and its surrounding areas) is characterized by a high level of industrial specialization and concentration, with a complex of energy, electrical, transport and agricultural engineering. East Kharkiv district is centered around Kupiansk. The main industries are transport and agricultural machinery. Food and light industry, production of building materials and equipment for the sugar industry are also developed in this region. The South Kharkiv district has large gas fields - Shebelynske, Yefremivske, Krestyschenske and others. The towns of the district specialize in machine building, chemical industry, and production of building materials.
The region consists of 27 (rural) districts, 17 cities, including 7 of regional significance (regional subordination) - Izyum, Kupiansk, Lozova, Liubotyn, Pervomaiskyi, Kharkiv, Chuhuiv, and 10 of district significance, 61 urban-type settlements, 1542 villages, 138 townships, 60 township councils, and 381 village councils.
