Municipal institution "Chernihiv Regional Youth Center" of the Chernihiv Regional Council
The Chernihiv Regional Youth Center is located in the historic center of the city. The building, a former Shchors cinema, was built in 1939. Ironically, it was seriously damaged twice during its existence. The first time was during the Second World War. The cinema was rebuilt in 1947. The building has architectural value as one of the few surviving examples of architecture from the 1930s in Chernihiv.
In 2017, the Chernihiv Youth Center, one of the first institutions in Ukraine to specialize in working with young people according to new standards, was opened in the former cinema.
The team of the Center, independently and in partnership with activists, national and international organizations, institutions and services, constantly held events of various formats for young people. Consultations, trainings, festivals, fairs, forums. As well as theme parties, competitions, and movie screenings. The youth center hosted foreign language conversation clubs, film and documentary clubs, and board games.
The youth center had music and photography equipment, multimedia projectors, screens, document cameras, reading rooms, table tennis equipment, board games, seasonal and themed photo zones, and Wi-Fi access. The inclusive museum space "Arsenal of Ideas. Chernihiv" had permanent tactile art exhibitions, a touch screen, and toys for children.
Before the Russian invasion, the youth center occupied about 2500 square meters of space.
On February 27, 2022, as a result of an air strike on the Chernihiv City Council building, a Russian missile hit the building, causing significant damage.
The building is currently in disrepair and needs to be rebuilt.
Reconstruction
ONOVA, the League of Renewal of Ukraine, has launched a project to renovate the historic building as part of a memorandum of cooperation with the Chernihiv City Council.
The damage has already been mapped on the ONOVA GIS HUB portal.
Active work on technical reports and a conceptual design is underway.
