"50 million LED lamps will save about 1 GW of electricity. Given that the average deficit of our energy system is about 2.5 GW, this project could also significantly help," said President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy on December 13 in Paris at the Solidarity with the Ukrainian People conference.
According to the program announced by the President, it is planned to replace 50 million outdated lamps in the country. Starting from January 3, 2023, Ukrainians will receive free LED lamps.
This project is being implemented thanks to the support of the European Union, as stated by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen in her Twitter:
"We will finance about 30 million LED bulbs for Ukraine. When 50 million of these bulbs are delivered with our partners, it will save 1 GW - the annual output of a nuclear power plant!"
"In dark times, we stand together with our Ukrainian friends," said Ms. Ursula.
⚡How to get free LED lamps?
The program provides for the replacement of 5 outdated lamps (incandescent lamps) with 5 saving bulbs.
Any adult Ukrainian can take part in the program. To do this, you just need to fill out an application on the website "Дія", and then make an exchange at any branch of "Ukrposhta".
⚡What are the savings for the country?
LED and fluorescent lamps consume several times less electricity than traditional incandescent lamps of the same light transmission.
Providing a luminous flux of 1200 lumens:
- incandescent lamp consumes 100 watts;
- LED lamp consumes only 12-15 watts.
That is, the use of 1 LED lamp instead of a traditional bulb will save the state 8 times.
The use of 50 million lamps will help to cover the deficit of the country's energy system, which arose after the Russian missile strikes on energy infrastructure facilities.
⚡And what about saving money for citizens for electricity consumption?
The average period of consumption:
- incandescent lamp 2000 hours,
- LED lamp - 30 000-50 000 hours.
And how much can Ukrainians save if these figures are translated into money?
Incandescent lamp 100 W: 0.10 kWh x 2000 hours x 1.44 UAH = 288 UAH
LED lamp 12 W: 0.012 kWh x 2000 hours x 1.44 UAH = 34.5 UAH.
This is the calculation of 1 bulb.
If Ukrainians respond and help implement this project, then by replacing 5 light bulbs, each of us will be able to save up to 20,000 UAH on electricity.
Therefore, the LED initiative of the President is one of the necessary and very effective tools to overcome Russian energy terror.
Ukraine’s Renovation League welcomes this practical initiative and is directly involved in its implementation.
To rebuild Ukraine better, more efficiently and more energy stronger is the goal of our activity!
