The Chernihiv Regional State Administration
The Chernihiv Regional State Administration is a local executive body and, within the scope of its powers, exercises executive power in the territory of Chernihiv region, as well as the powers delegated to it by the regional council.
The head of the regional state administration is Vyacheslav Chaus.
During martial law, he was the head of the Chernihiv Regional Military Administration.
Chernihiv region covers an area of 31,865 km² on the map of Ukraine and ranks third among other regions of Ukraine in terms of area.
The region is represented by 5 districts: Chernihiv, Nizhyn, Pryluky, Koryukiv, and Novhorod-Siverskyi. The districts are further divided into 57 united territorial communities.
Chernihiv region includes 16 cities and 29 urban-type settlements (towns). There are 45 settlements in total. Chernihiv has the largest population, 282,747 people, according to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine as of January 1, 2022.
Chernihiv region is one of the oldest historical regions of Ukraine. Since the 9th century, northerners have lived on the modern territory of the region, at the same time Chernihiv became part of the Kyivan state, in the 11th century the Chernihiv principality was formed, and the city of Chernihiv became a significant political, cultural, and economic center of Rus.
Chernihiv region has an industrial and agricultural structure of the economy. Occupying 5% of the territory with 2.6% of Ukraine's population, it provides almost 80% of the national output of woolen fabrics, 76% of wallpaper, 27% of chemical fibers and threads, 18% of oil production, and is the only region in Ukraine that produces cordage fabric, fire trucks, protein shells, pianos, and certain types of equipment for the agricultural sector.
In the sectoral structure of the region's industry, the priority sectors are food, fuel, machine building, metalworking, woodworking, pulp and paper, and light industry. The power industry, chemical and petrochemical industries also play a significant role. The chemical industry has gained importance in the region's economy. A number of industrial enterprises in the region are major producers in Ukraine.
Chernihiv region also has significant agricultural potential and is one of the most agriculturally developed regions in Ukraine. The region is one of the few in Ukraine with significant recreational potential. More than 20% of the territory has recreational land. The largest areas are in Kozelets, Chernihiv and Novhorod-Siverskyi districts. Favorable climatic conditions, diverse flora and fauna, and 610 natural protected areas make the region attractive for tourism development.
The region has a strong educational structure and holds one of the leading positions in the development of sports and training of Olympic athletes.
